Il patrimonio monastico francese è immenso e di altissimo valore storico e spirituale. Non esiste dipartimento o regione della Francia in cui non ci siano almeno un’abbazia, un monastero un remoto priorato da visitare. Molti sono dei veri e propri tesori artistici, altri ospitano oggi musei o associazioni, una parte minore, ma pur sempre qualificata, è ancora abitata da comunità che si rifanno alla regola benedettina. Proprio alle abbazie francesi si deve lo sviluppo, oggi largamente diffuso, dei negozi monastici e della creazione di veri e propri brand e dell’e-commerce legato a una piattaforma comune di vendita. Scegliere dieci esperienze particolari da vivere nelle abbazie francesi non è quindi stato facile ma quelle che ho selezionato sono divise tra valori artistici, esperienze spirituali e, perché no, possibilità di shopping. –
The French monastic heritage is huge and of the highest historical and spiritual significance. There is no department or region of France where there is not at least one abbey, monastery, or remote priory to visit. Many of these are true artistic treasures, others are now museums or associations, and a smaller but still valuable number are still inhabited by communities following the Benedictine rule. The French abbeys are precisely the reason for the development, now widespread, of monastic shops, the creation of real brands, and e-commerce linked to a common sales platform. So choosing ten special experiences to live in French abbeys was not easy, but the experiences I selected are divided between artistic values, spiritual activities and, why not, shopping opportunities.

Guardare il mare cristallino che circonda il monastero nella torre sull’acqua dell’antica abbazia sull’isola di Lérins
Watching the crystal-clear sea surrounding the monastery in the tower over the water of the ancient abbey on the island of Lérins
Perché: al largo di Cannes, l’isola di Lérins è uno dei più antichi insediamenti monastici in Europa. Anche se poco rimane dei suoi edifici più antichi, la torre costruita dai monaci per proteggersi dalle incursioni dei pirati è uno dei luoghi più strani che si possano trovare nelle abbazie europee.
Why: off the coast of Cannes, the island of Lérins is one of the oldest monastic settlements in Europe. However not much remains of its oldest buildings. The tower built by the monks to protect themselves from pirate raids is one of the strangest sights to be found in European abbeys.

Attending a service in the simple wooden church in the Norman abbey of Saint Wandrille.
Perché: solo suggestive rovine rimangono dell’antica chiesa abbaziale di Saint Wandrille, in Normandia, ma l’effetto di sobria spiritualità della nuova chiesa in un antico granaio in legno mi ha realmente affascinato!
Why: Impressive ruins remain of the old abbey church of Saint Wandrille in Normandy, but the effect of simple spirituality of the new church in an old wooden barn really fascinated me!

Pensare alla sobrietà e al rigore dei primi cistercensi osservando il dormitorio di Senanque
Reflecting on the sobriety and austerity of the first Cistercians while observing the Senanque dormitory.
Perché: le abbazie cistercensi francesi sono luoghi di grande fascino. Senanque, abbazia della Provenza tra campi di lavanda, conserva uno dei più bei dormitori monastici, testimonianza di quando l’assoluta ricerca della comunità, tipica dei primi cistercensi, escludeva anche il concetto di cella privata.
Why: French Cistercian abbeys are very charming places. Senanque, the Provençal abbey, amidst lavender fields, has one of the most beautiful dormitories, testifying the days when the absolute search for community, typical of the early Cistercians, excluded even the concept of a private cell.

Osservare il meraviglioso pavimento della chiesa del priorato di Ganagobie
Observing the beautiful floor of the Ganagobie Priory Church
Perché: affacciata su un terrazzo montuoso in una valle della Provenza, l’abbazia di Ganagobie possiede una bellissima chiesa romanica, con un ancor più affascinante pavimento. Ci si va anche per fare acquisti nel suo fornito negozio. Per me il balsamo di Ganagobie è diventato un toccasana indispensabile nella stagione invernale.
Why: overlooking a mountainous terrace in a Provençal valley, Ganagobie Abbey has a beautiful Romanesque church with an even more impressive floor. Visitors also visit it to do some shopping in its well-stocked shop. For me, Ganagobie balm has become an essential winter remedy.

Fare shopping di prodotti naturali e di libri rari sul monachesimo nei negozi di En Calcat
Do some shopping for natural products and rare books on monasticism in the shops of En Calcat.
Perché: tipico esempio di grande e dinamica abbazia francese doppia (ce ne sono una maschile e una femminile a poche centinaia di metri di distanza l’una dall’altra) di fondazione ottocentesca, En Calcat, presso Dourgne nel sud della Francia, non ha nulla di artisticamente pregevole ma è talmente viva, ricca di offerte e di possibilità culturali da suggerire senz’altro una visita.
Why: a perfect model of a large, dynamic French double abbey (there is an abbey for men and an abbey for women just a few hundred meters from each other), founded in the 19th century, En Calcat, near Dourgne in the south of France, has nothing of artistic merit but is so lively, with so many offers and cultural possibilities, that it is well worth a visit

Perché: quando penso a un’abbazia medievale “da scegliere per un film” il mio pensiero va a Fontgombault e alla sua splendida chiesa, fatta apposta per elevare, se ce ne fosse bisogno, la magia del canto gregoriano eseguito dai suoi monaci che appartengono alla congregazione di Solesmes (vedi punto 1).
Why: whenever I think of a medieval abbey ” to select for a film “, my thoughts go to Fontgombault and its splendid church, made to elevate, if need be, the magic of Gregorian chant performed by its monks who belong to the Solesmes congregation (see point 1).

Mangiare una caramella a forma di monaco nella chiesa abbaziale di Saint Benoit – sur – Loire
Eating a monk-shaped candy in the abbey church of Saint Benoit – Sur – Loire.
Perché: insieme a quella di Fontgombault la chiesa abbaziale di Fleury, a Saint Benoit-sur- Loire, è il miglior esempio di spazio monastico ancora in uso in Francia. Qui si conservano anche delle reliquie del Santo Fondatore (Benedetto da Norcia) che ne fanno la “Montecassino Francese”. Nel negozio dell’abbazia si vendono gustose caramelle dalla forma inequivocabile!
Why: together with the Fontgombault abbey church, the Fleury abbey church in Saint Benoit- sur-Loire is the best example of a monastic space still in use in France. It also preserves relics of the founding saint (Benedict of Nursia), making it the ‘French Monte Cassino’. The abbey shop sells tasty, unmistakably shaped candies!

Perché: l’abbazia pirenaica, la favorita di un monaco a cui avevo chiesto di indicarmi la più bella abbazia francese, ha una cripta visigotica di grande atmosfera e metà chiostro davvero notevole. L’altra metà è stata portata… a New York!
Why: the Pyrenean abbey, the favorite of a monk I had asked to indicate the most beautiful abbey in France, has an atmospheric Visigothic crypt and half a truly remarkable cloister. The other half has been moved to… New York!

Andare alle origini del movimento cistercense a Citeaux nel cuore dei vigneti della Borgogna
Discover the origins of the Cistercian movement in Citeaux in the middle of the Burgundy vineyards.
Perché: anche se è stata quasi completamente distrutta durante la Rivoluzione Francese, l’abbazia di Citeaux, oggi abitata dai cistercensi della riforma trappista, rimane pur sempre il luogo dove l’ordine è nato, ricordato da un museo. Attorno i famosi vigneti della Borgogna!
Why: Even if it was almost completely destroyed during the French Revolution, Citeaux Abbey, now home to Trappists, is where the order was born and is remembered by a museum. All around are the famous Burgundy vineyards!
