Il Belgio è una terra ad alta densità abbaziale. Ci sono abbazie benedettine, abbazie di Trappisti (… famose soprattutto per la loro produzione di birra) e grandi abbazie di un altro ordine religioso, tanto antico quanto poco conosciuto; i Canonici Premostratensi. Proseguendo nel nostro viaggio alla scoperta degli ordini religiosi, ecco un piccolo itinerario che si può compiere agevolmente in una giornata per scoprire arte e tradizione di questo ordine di canonici regolari che pone grande attenzione alla liturgia, al canto gregoriano ma anche (siamo in Belgio dopotutto!) alla produzione di birra.
Fondato da san Norberto di Xanten nel 1130, l’ordine dei Canonici Regolari Premontrè (noto anche col nome di Norbertini) è una famiglia monastica che segue la regola di sant’Agostino ma che per consuetudini di vita, tipologia degli spazi abitativi e liturgia presenta numerose affinità con i monaci benedettini. Un tempo assai diffusi in tutto il Nord Europa, i Premostratensi dal bianco abito, sono stati letteralmente decimati dalla Rivoluzione Francese ma, a differenza di quanto avvenne per i Benedettini che risorsero fortificati da questa terribile esperienza, essi non riuscirono mai più a ritrovare l’antico splendore con la sola eccezione del Belgio che è divenuto la loro culla. Particolarmente attenti al culto, che celebrano con grande cura accompagnandolo col canto gregoriano, i Premostratensi sono anche abili predicatori e hanno elaborato apprezzate birre anche se Leffe e Grimbergen, le più famose, sono ormai prodotte da gruppi industriali. Solo Tongerlo e Postel mantengono ancora un produzione semi-artigianale.
ABDIJ VAN AVERBODE (Abbazia di Averbode)
L’itinerario parte da questa grande abbazia che sorge nel comune di Scherpenheuvel-Zichem nei pressi della cittadina di Diest, nel Brabante belga. Fondata nel 1134. appare come un grande complesso dominato da una chiesa barocca dall’alta facciata. Si entra nel cortile per una porta fortificata del Trecento, avendo di fronte i maestosi edifici abbaziali del Settecento. Gli edifici si possono visitare solo con una guida (da Pasqua a Ognissanti, solo di domenica), mentre sempre visitabile è la chiesa, edificata nel 1664 nel cui interno a una sola navata, lungo ben 83 metri e illuminato da enormi finestre, si trova un pregevole coro in legno intagliato che divide in due lo spazio, isolando una sproporzionata abside (foto sopra). Vi si svolgono solenni funzioni in canto gregoriano alle 11.45 (domenica alle 11.00) e ai i vespri delle 18.00. Nel negozio si trovano in vendita libri, dischi, souvenirs religiosi. L’abbazia possiede anche una propria tipografia e una casa editrice di testi di spiritualità. Nel grande cortile si trova un caffè di grande charme, lo Het Moment, ricavato ristrutturando in modo contemporaneo antichi edifici di servizio.
NORBERTIJNENABDIJ TONGERLO – Abbazia premonstratense di Tongerlo
Verdi prati circondano gli eleganti edifici abbaziali di Tongerlo che, secondo uno schema comune ad altre fondazioni dell’ordine in Belgio, si estendono su di una superficie notevole. Un suggestivo ponticello, che scavalca un canale che segue il perimetro dell’abbazia, ci porta all’interno del vasto cortile, passando attraverso una porta in stile rinascimentale fiammingo di fronte alla quale spicca la chiesa neogotica, mentre a destra si trovano gli edifici abbaziali di stile classico. Uno dei principali motivi di interesse nella visita di questa antica abbazia è il Museo da Vinci (aperto dalle 14 alle 17 nei giorni feriali e nelle domeniche d’estate; ingresso a pagamento) che conserva un copia dell’Ultima Cena del maestro toscano. Una mostra permanente, allestita in un edificio antico all’interno del cortile, spiega gli aspetti della vita premostratense. Oggi a Tongerlo risiede una grande comunità di canonici impegnati nell’attività pastorale, nell’insegnamento, nella cura di parrocchie. Nel grande negozio Oude Linden, oltre ad articoli religiosi e libri, si può acquistare la birra vincitrice di premi prodotta secondo la antica ricetta dei canonici .
ABDIJ DER NORBERTIJNEN POSTEL – Abbazia di Postel
Tra le abbazie premostratensi del Belgio, Postel è quella che sorge nell’ambiente più suggestivo, isolata tra foreste e stagni, a pochi chilometri dal confine olandese. La sua storia è sostanzialmente simile a quella delle abbazie precedenti: fondazione nel XII secolo, vita tranquilla e prospera fino alla Rivoluzione francese, soppressione nel 1794 e riapertura nel 1847. Anche a questa abbazia si accede attraverso una monumentale porta rinascimentale da dove si entra in un grande spazio attorno al quale si ergono gli edifici conventuali dominati da una bella torre in stile rinascimentale fiammingo. Il vero gioiello dell’abbazia è però la chiesa romanica, una delle poche superstiti in Belgio, che si trova sul lato opposto rispetto all’ingresso. L’ambiente di Postel è suggestivo e rilassante poiché nelle mura dell’abbazia sono compresi anche recinti dove pascolano tranquillamente animali selvatici. La visita agli edifici abbaziali, edificati nel Seicento che presentano graziose facciate in stile fiammingo, è normalmente proibita. Per visitare la grande Biblioteca e la famosa raccolta di miniature e incisioni, tra cui una famosa Apocalisse di Duerer, potete rivolgervi all’ufficio Huyze Colibrant, all’interno dell’abbazia. All’ingresso si trova un accogliente gasthof, De Beiaard, in cui si possono degustare le birre e i formaggi prodotti dai canonici, disponibili anche nel negozio Abdji Winkel all’ingresso.
PREMOSTRATENZERABDIJ GRIMBERGEN. Abbazia di Grimbergen
Grimbergen, una località della periferia nord di Bruxelles, è famosa più per il brand della sua birra (non più di proprietà dei monaci ma di un grande gruppo internazionale) che per la sua vita spirituale che pure è intensa e dinamica. La mole della basilica abbaziale si eleva sulle poche case di un villaggio. Si tratta di una chiesa barocca che spicca anche per la sua pietra grigia, in contrasto con gli edifici abbaziali moderni edificati invece in laterizio. Grimbergen è la più antica abbazia premonstratense oggi esistente in Belgio e ospita una grande comunità di canonici alquanto dinamici. All’interno della chiesa, da notare i preziosi intagli seicenteschi in legno (confessionali, stalli del coro); nella Sagrestia, il prezioso rivestimento in legno e affreschi che riproducono la vita di San Norberto. Le funzioni (alle 9.00 in settimana e alle 10.00 la domenica) sono solenni e accompagnate dal canto gregoriano. I canonici di Grimbergen curano in modo particolare la qualità delle funzioni; cassette, dischi e cd con loro esecuzioni si trovano in vendita nella libreria abbaziale.

We’re in Belgium the abbey land! Here you can visit Benedictine abbeys, Trappist abbeys (… famous for their production of beer), and great abbeys of another old religious order as well. Here is a one-day itinerary to discover the art and tradition of the Premonstratense Canons skilled in Gregorian chant and, we are in Belgium after all!, beer’s production.
Founded by Saint Norbert of Xanten in 1130, the order of the Canons Regular of Premontrè (aka Norbertines) is a monastic family following the rule of Saint Augustine and for its way of life, liturgy and habit have affinities with Benedictine monks. Once widespread throughout Northern Europe, the white Premonstratense Canons were literally decimated by the French Revolution but, unlike what happened to the Benedictines who rose again fortified by this terrible experience, they never managed to regain their former glory. With one exception: Belgium, which has become their cradle someway. Focused on the liturgy, they celebrate three times a day with great attention with the Gregorian chant, the Premonstratense are also skilled brewers. Leffe and Grimbergen, their most famous brands, are now produced by industrial groups, while Tongerlo and Postel are still produced by Canons themselves.
ABDIJ VAN AVERBODE (Abbey of Averbode)
The itinerary starts from this abbey, located in the municipality of Scherpenheuvel-Zichem near the town of Diest, in the Belgian Brabant. Founded in 1134, it appears today as a large complex on several levels, dominated by the beautiful Baroque church with its high facade. You enter the courtyard through a fortified door of the fourteenth century facing the majestic eighteenth century abbey buildings. These buildings can only be visited with a guide (from Easter to All Saints’ Day, only on Sundays), while the church, built in 1664, is always open to the public. The church has a single nave, 83 m long and is illuminated by enormous windows. Look at its valuable carved wooden choir that divides the space in two, isolating a very deep apse (ph. above), daily used for solemn Gregorian chant functions at 11.45 a.m. (Sundays at 11.00 a.m.). In the abbey’s shop you can find books, records and religious souvenirs on sale. The abbey also has its own printing house and a publishing house for spiritual texts. The charming café Het Moment stands now in a former service building.
NORBERTIJNENABDIJ TONGERLO – Premonstratense Abbey of Tongerlo
Green meadows surround the elegant Tongerlo’s abbey buildings which, according to a plan common to other foundations of the Order in Belgium, extend itself over a considerable area. A charming little bridge, crossing a canal that follows the perimeter of the abbey, takes you inside the abbey courtyard trespassing a Flemish Renaissance-style door. The Neo-Gothic church stands out facing abbey buildings in neoclassical style. One of the abbey highlights is the Da Vinci Museum (open from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and on Sundays in summer; admission fee) which houses a copy of the Last Supper painted by the Tuscan Master. A permanent exhibition, set up in a building in the middle of the courtyard, explains the Premonstratense life. The large Oude Linden shop displays religious articles, books, and a premium beer produced following the original recipe.
ABDIJ DER NORBERTIJNEN POSTEL – Abbey of Postel
Postel, isolated between forests and ponds a few kilometers from the Dutch border, is probably the most charming abbey of the order in Belgium. Founded in the 12th century had a peaceful and prosperous life until the French Revolution; suppressed in 1794 reopened in 1847. First, you meet a monumental Renaissance door followed by a large open space surrounded by convent buildings. A beautiful tower in Flemish Renaissance style looks at the real abbey’s jewel, the Romanesque church, one of the few surviving in Belgium. The abbey is a quite suggestive and relaxing place to stay because its walls also include enclosures where wild animals peacefully graze. The visit to the abbey buildings, built in the seventeenth century, is normally not allowed but to visit the large library and the collection of miniatures and engravings, including a famous Apocalypse made by Albrecht Dürer contact the Huyze Colibrant office inside the abbey courtyard. At the entrance to the abbey, you find also a cozy Gasthof, De Beiaard, where you can taste the beers and cheese produced by the canons, also available in the Abdji Winkel shop at the entrance.
PREMOSTRATENZERABDIJ GRIMBERGEN. Grimbergen Abbey
Grimbergen, a small town on the northern Brussels outskirts, is worldwide famous for its beer (no longer brewed by the monks) more than for its intense and dynamic spiritual life. Abbey baroque church, made of grey stone, contrasts the modern abbey red brick buildings. Grimbergen is the oldest existing Premonstratense abbey in Belgium and houses a large community of dynamic canons. Inside the church, noteworthy are the precious 17th-century woodcarving works (confessionals, choir stalls) and, in the Sacristy, frescoes depicting the life of Saint Norbert. The services (at 9.00 a.m. during the week and at 10.00 a.m. on Sundays) are solemn and accompanied by Gregorian chant. The canons of Grimbergen pay particular attention to the quality of the functions; cassettes, records, and CDs with their performances are on sale in the abbey shop.
