Dal 2015 il piccolo villaggio di Christiansfeld, pochi chilometri a sud dalla città danese di Kolding nello Jutland, è entrato a far parte del patrimonio UNESCO. Forse vi chiederete che cosa possieda di tanto eclatante un semplice villaggio danese (perché di questo in fondo si tratta) da giustificare questo prestigioso riconoscimento. Scopriamolo insieme.
Since 2015, the small village of Christiansfeld, a few kilometers south of the Danish city of Kolding in Jutland, has become part of the UNESCO heritage. Maybe you are wondering what is so extraordinary in a simple Danish village ( because this is essentially it ) to motivate this prestigious recognition. Let’s find out together.
Nel 1773 un gruppo di Fratelli Moravi, una confessione religiosa nata nell’attuale Repubblica Ceca nel XV secolo ma poi, a seguito di mille vicissitudini che hanno spesso toni romanzeschi, costretta all’esilio in Polonia e in Germania, ottiene dal re Cristiano VII di Danimarca il permesso di fondare una piccola comunità nei pressi della fattoria di Tyrstrup nel sud della Danimarca. A spingere il re in questa concessione era stato il medico di corte Struense, diventato celebre per essere il protagonista di un romanzo intitolato il Medico di Corte e del fortunato film The Royal Affair. Il lungimirante ministro era rimasto colpito dalle abilità imprenditoriali e artigianali che i membri della Fratellanza avevano acquisito col passare del tempo.
In 1773 a group of Brothers Moravians, a religious congregation born in what is now the Czech Republic in the fifteenth century but then, as a result of a thousand events that often have fictional tones, forced into exile in Poland and Germany, obtained from King Christian VII of Denmark permission to found a small community near the farm of Tyrstrup in southern Denmark. The king was urged to grant this permission by the court physician Struense, who became famous for being the protagonist of the novel The Court Physician and the successful film The Royal Affair. The far-sighted minister was impressed by the craftsmanship and entrepreneurial skills that the members of the Brotherhood had acquired over time.
I Fratelli Moravi, noti anche come Herrnhütter dal nome dell’insediamento di Herrnhut fondato in Sassonia dal conte filantropo riformatore Nicolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf (anche sulla sua vita ci sarebbe tanto da dire ed esiste anche un film, intitolato Count Zinzendorf reperibile su Amazon), erano cristiani evangelici che cercavano di vivere una vita umile, senza differenze sociali, basata sulla preghiera e il lavoro. Ma forse dovrei dire “sono” perché la comunità, grazie al grande sforzo missionario compiuto tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo, ancora esiste e conta ancora qui a Christianfeld un centinaio di persone.
The Moravian Brothers, also known as Herrnhütter from the name of the settlement of Herrnhut founded in Saxony by the philanthropic reformer Count Nicolaus Ludwig Zinzendorf ( even on his life there would be much to say, a film exists, entitled Count Zinzendorf available on Amazon), were evangelical Christians who aimed to live a humble life, without social differences, based on prayer and work. Perhaps I should say “are” because the community, thanks to the great missionary effort made between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, still exists and still counts here in Christianfeld about one hundred people.
Il nucleo centrale del villaggio è sopravvissuto intatto e si presenta esattamente come era agli inizi dell’800. Due vie parallele, fiancheggiate da case in mattoni tutte uguali, sono intersecate da una piazza rettangolare un lato della quale è occupato dalla Sala di Preghiera.
The central core of the village has remained untouched and looks exactly as it did at the beginning of the 19th century. Two parallel streets, lined with identical brick houses, are intersected by a rectangular square, a side of which is occupied by the Prayer Hall.
L’interno è di una disarmante e coinvolgente semplicità. I banchi, in legno dipinto di bianco guardano al semplice altare, ricoperto in panno verde, da dove il pastore guida la celebrazione domenicale. Per i Fratelli Moravi la musica è molto importante, soprattuto nel canto alternato di inni che è la base delle funzioni, ma a Christiansfeld si è formata anche una tradizione di strumenti a ottone.
The interior is of disarming and engaging simplicity. The benches, made of white-painted wood, face the simple pulpit, covered in green fabric, from where the preacher leads the Sunday celebration. For the Moravian Brethren, music is very important, especially in the alternating singing of hymns that is the basis of the services but a tradition of brass instruments has also been established in Christiansfeld.
Quando il conte Zinzendrof si trova ad organizzare la comunità di Herrnhut formata da profughi e fuggiaschi provenienti da diversi territori ma anche professanti diverse forme di cristianesimo che definisco per semplicità “eretico” (non solo per i cattolici ma anche per i luterani osservanti), opta per una curiosa divisione in “cori”, gruppi costituiti da membri omogenei per sesso o età che convivono in un edificio praticando vita comune (coro degli uomini, coro delle donne, coro delle vedove) fino a che non formano un proprio nucleo famigliare. Gli edifici che ospitano i “cori” sono leggermente più grandi delle case comuni perché hanno all’interno una propria sala di preghiera e un refettorio.
When Count Zinzendrof decided to organize the community of Herrnhut made up of refugees and fugitives coming from different territories but also professing different forms of Christianity that I define for simplicity as “heretical”, and this not only for Catholics but also for observant Lutherans, opts for a curious division into “choirs” consisting of members homogeneous in sex or age who live together in a building practicing common life (men’s choir, women’s choir, widows’ choir) until they form their own family unit. The buildings of the “choirs” are slightly larger than the common houses because they have their own prayer room and refectory inside.
Molta importanza viene data all’educazione, sia religiosa che pratica, perché (e questo è uno dei motivi della grande abilità artigianale dei Fratelli) fin da bambini vengono istruiti in numerose pratiche manuali che permettono alla comunità di essere autosufficiente. Ispiratore di queste teorie è anche il noto filosofo educatore Comenius che apparteneva proprio a questa confessione religiosa.
A great deal of importance is given to education, both religious and practical because (and this is just one of the reasons for the great craft skills of the Brothers) right from childhood they are instructed in numerous manual practices that allow the community to be self-sufficient. An inspirer of these theories is also the well-known philosopher-educator Comenius who belonged to this religious brotherhood.
Un luogo particolarmente toccante a Christiansfeld è il cimitero, un grande prato diviso in due da un viale in cui sono disposte lapidi in pietra, tutte rigorosamente uguali (da un lato gli uomini, dall’altro le donne), per ribadire come le diversità, bandite durante la via, vengono evitate anche nella morte.
A particularly touching place in Christiansfeld is the cemetery, a large lawn divided in two by an avenue in which stone tombstones are arranged, all strictly equal (men on one side, women on the other) to reiterate how differences, banished during the road, are avoided even in death.
Nulla di eclatante quindi, se pensiamo a un Sito Unesco come qualcosa di artisticamente o paesaggisticamente impressionante, ma una storia particolare, poco conosciuta, umile e discreta come la vita dei suoi protagonisti, che ha trovato un giusto riconoscimento internazionale. Ma è anche un invito a non cercare sempre la magniloquenza e ad apprezzare la bellezza delle piccole cose.
Therefore, nothing striking, if you think about a UNESCO site as an artistically or scenically impressive place, but a particular story, less known, humble and discreet as its inhabitants’ lives, that received an international award, but which is also an invitation not to look for magniloquence and to appreciate the beauty of small things.
