Cupole: immagini del cielo – Domes: Images of Heaven – Spiritual training 11

Vertiginous, evocative, and disorienting, domes, whether small, large, or monumental, overlook the worship spaces in every religion. A dome is a passageway, a window, an eye open to the sky, an allusion and an illusion, a marvelous feat of architectural virtuosity, a vessel for sacred images, and a challenge for painters and decorators of every era and in every land. Observing domes, losing oneself in their lines and their evocative power, helps one’s spirit soar upward!

The ideal position to observe a dome is to lie down on the floor and gaze up at its apex! This is not an easily achievable viewing point, especially in Christian churches. Still, no doubt positioning oneself aligned with the apex of the dome and imagining an invisible thread connecting us to it, as in certain Taoist meditation exercises, can be a powerful mystical experience. However, inside a mosque, the soft carpets and complete absence of furnishings allow you to connect physically as well, losing yourself in the visual representation of the sky, magically illuminated by skillfully placed windows.

Some domes, especially from the Baroque era, evoke a sense of vertigo, where the use of illusion manages to create an upward surge encouraged by the figures of fluttering angels. On domes, stories are depicted, stories are told, and interweaving patterns of lines and colors are constructed; they allude to something higher that we can only imagine. Domes present illusions that make you imagine something that doesn’t exist, and you are invited to accept it as true through the power of narrative and color.

Certain domes feature light effects that, depending on the hour of the day, make you feel as if the divine power has truly been gathered in that place for your exclusive benefit. These domes invite you to surrender, to renounce understanding, and to stop asking why, because the answer is limited to a ray of light, a luminous eye, the figure of a judge or creator, or a presence of clouds floating in a blue sky, reminding you that, at least in that moment, you are there, suspended among them, training your spirit!
